When I first heard Republican Governor busy or flying immigrant free sanctuary city, I was immediately opposed to it. To me, it feels like another merciless stunt to elevate their status with the GOP platform.
But then I started to hear about the leaders from these free cities signing “disaster declaration“, complain that”terrible“Flow has made a”humanitarian situation“And the reports say”stress a social safety net. “
And then it hit me. Although these stunts can be difficult, there is still a there there. The blue states finally understand what the red border states have to deal with every day.
Specific case: total about 7,000 migrants cause mayor of Washington, DC declare a public emergency and ask the National Guard for help. But that number is not equal to the number of migrants stopped across the southern border in one day. Heck, Theo El Paso Timesthere were “more than 900 migrants released by US Border Patrol in Downtown El Paso in the past week.”
(It is impossible to know how many illegal border crossings went undetected, but border agents made about 1.82 million arrests at the southern border so far this fiscal year.)
To be fair, border states and towns do ask for and receive assistance from the federal government — but their anger and frustration stem from the belief that the federal government is not stopping, detaining, or deporting undocumented immigrants effectively. For example, less than a year ago, The New York Times report that “The immigration officers released a lot of migrants into the town [Del Rio, Texas] in March that residents complained that the spike would drain the town’s limited resources. “
Although New York City received Fewer migrants are busier than DC., the influx of immigrants is prompting Mayor Eric Adams to suggest it’s time to reassess the city’s “right to stay” policy. This policy guarantees a person the right to sleep in a homeless shelter, regardless of their immigration status.
“The city’s system is nearing a breaking point. Therefore, the city’s previous operations, which had never envisaged the arrival of thousands of people in New York City, must be reevaluated,” said Mayor. Adams said.
“The city is exploding at the seams”, City Council President Adrienne Adams said“And quite frankly, unprepared to deal with the incoming wave of individuals.”
If New York City can’t handle the flow, do you think Del Rio—Population 36,000 — maybe?
To be sure, there are millions of immigrants – including undocumented – in blue states like New York. They are part of the social fabric. However, the rich blue states may not have realized the toll that a sudden and large influx has to pay for government services. When a large group of people come to your community unannounced and uninvited, it puts a strain on your government and general resources.
Furthermore, sanctuary cities and progressive policies (including policies pursued by President Joe Biden) can act as a magnet for people who cross borders illegally in border countries.
With this maneuver, Republican governors are forcing the rest of the country to sympathize with the plight of border states and grapple with the consequences of a country unable to control its borders.
“If New York City can’t handle the flow, do you think Del Rio – population 36,000 – can?“
Until recently, this gamble belonged to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Arizona Governor Doug Ducey—but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has now joined (and escalated the troll) by send two planes carrying Venezuelan migrants to the “rich man’s playground,” known as Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.
To their credit, The coffee-loving liberals of the summer colony have responded with compassion so far. But it’s worth noting that Washington, DC, and New York City also welcome migrants—And we are only talking about one estimated 50 migrants (so far) at Martha’s Vineyard.
Speaking of which, for anyone worried about inhumane treatment, there are worse places to be sent. For someone fleeing Venezuela or Haiti, Martha’s Vineyard hardly feels like being sent to Gitmo. Heck, it’s not even Ocean City, Maryland. In addition, the Biden administration reported take migrant children to Chattanooga, Tennessee, overnight last year, while also sending immigrant children to Dallas, Texas, and Miami, Florida. All in all, I’d rather stay at Martha’s Vineyard.
I would say that there is a big caveat to all of this: There are reports that migrants have mistakenly believed they were going to Boston and that jobs and housing await them. This is like being told you’re flying to Washington, DC, and then realizing you’ve flown into Baltimore/Washington International Airport, an airport that whatever the name says is not in the Washington area, DC — and that you’ll be staying at the Hilton while it’s actually a hostel. Obviously, asylum seekers should not be deceived or deceived. If true, it cannot be determined.
To me, however, it seems odd that progressives are more angry at Florida and Texas for sending immigrants north than in Venezuela or Haiti (or Mexico) for creating an environment where a people are willing to risk their lives to come to the United States . This is just one of the perceptions that this “gimmick” has me pondering.
That’s not to say that DeSantis’ strategy is effective or will be cost-free. Migrants — many of whom are able to flee violence and seek asylum—to be used as a pawn to make a political point.
It is impossible to predict what tragedy may befall them (or others) in transit or on arrival. If and when that happens, some fingers could be directed south to the border states. There is also the possibility of a political backlash at home (e.g.: DeSantis is giving off heat from the Venezuelan diaspora in South Florida).
But provide credit when credit is due. Republicans have finally created a stunt that owns liars, highlighting hypocrisy, and makes us think. For them, it’s a huge improvement.
