There was a pandemic in Paris last week, and it’s no surprise that Timothée Chalamet was involved.
Chalamet was in town for fashion week, drawing crowds of fans to the venue where Haider Ackermann was presenting a couture collection he designed as a guest for Jean Paul Gaultier. For the occasion, Chalamet wore inappropriate clothing that was related to — naturally, as one of his famous eagle-eyed fans. find out—two different Ackermann outfits he has worn in the past: a floral printed jacket similar to the one he wore to the ceremony. Astute fashion observers and/or Timothée Chalamet will know that Chalamet, an American actor who grew up speaking French, and Ackermann, a Colombian designer who grew up in France, are great friends. More than that, they’re like you. And now seems like the best time to take a closer look at their friendship.
Indeed, Chalamet, 27, is the younger brother of Ackermann’s older brother. Based on a year 2019 fashion magazine interview with the designer, the pair first met through the actor’s agent, Brian Swardstrom, who was contacted when Timmy was preparing his first large rugs for Call me by your name 2017; Ackermann, who was designing for Italian designer Berluti at the time, matched him with a grape-purple suede jacket for the film’s premiere in Berlin. About a year later, Chalamet hugged Ackermann backstage at his menswear show Berluti in Paris, and posed for pictures with legendary French actress and designer Isabelle Huppert. Not long after, he attended his first Academy Awards ceremony (as a Best Actor nominee for Call me by your name, nothing more, nothing less) wears a white suit designed by Ackermann. “He was the young man among all those massive actors. I want him to be chaste,” Ackermann speak GQ that time period, about the Oscars suit. “We did it, and together we built this story. It was a beautiful friendship.”
While establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest and most fashion-savvy stars, Chalamet frequently looks to her big brother’s sexy, precise tailoring. In turn, the actor becomes—just like him French Dispatch costar, and Ackermann’s friend of more than 20 years, Tilda Swinton—one of the designer’s muses. Especially the bond between two French-speaking guys who love fashion.
In 2019, the designer wears her outfit “Dear TIMO BRO” for the premiere of the Venice Film Festival King, and then he posed next to Chalamet (and Chalamet’s teen idol, rapper Kid Cudi) on the red carpet. Later that year, Timmy and Haider collaborate to design hoodies Proceeds went to a relief organization focused on protecting the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
“It was a conversation with Timothée—no words needed. We understand each other like old confidants—people with similar sensibilities always find each other,” designer tell the British GQ in 2021.
