Elizabeth Hubbard, who has appeared 14 times on Broadway and has long since played Dr. Althea Davis and the dreaded Lucinda Walsh in daytime soap operas doctors And When the world turns, respectively, died. She was 89.
Hubbard died Saturday of cancer at her home in Roxbury, Connecticut, her son, Jeremy Bennett, recounts Hollywood Reporter.
On the big screen, Hubbard plays Gene Hackman’s gynecologist girlfriend in I Never Sing For My Father (1970) and appeared in bell (1979), Ordinary people (1980), cold river (1982) and Stage Center (2000).
She played Dr. Althea on NBC’s doctors from 1964-82 and the boss manipulating Lucinda on CBS’ When the world turns from 1984 until the show ended in September 2010. (Lucinda’s John Dixon and Larry Bryggman eventually arrived in Amsterdam.)
“I was very lucky to play Lucinda – a character who can do anything,” she said TV User Manual in 2010. “She can lie, break the law, she doesn’t have to be good, and she always has that checkbook ready. Always!”
Nominated for 11 Daytime Emmy Awards, Hubbard won in 1974 when it was her turn to play Davis and play Edith Wilson, Woodrow Wilson’s wife, on NBC’s Diary of the First Lady in ’76. Her next eight nominations come for her work on When the world turns (all losses), followed by final in 2016 as American sexologist on digital soap Anacostia.
One of three children, Hubbard was born in New York on December 22, 1933. Her mother, Elizabeth Wright Hubbard, was a pioneer in homeopathy and one of the first women. received a medical degree from Columbia University.
Hubbard graduated from Radcliffe College in 1955, studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and made her Broadway debut as a replacement actress in the revival of Three-cent opera house right after its ’55 arc.
Her Broadway resume also includes obligatory, A Day in Joe Egg’s Death, I miss you mom and her last credit, 1983 Dancing A Little Closer To Me.
Hubbard starts with CBS soap Indicator lights in 1962 when it went live and was 15 minutes long. “I replaced some of the actresses who turned up,” she recalls. “They just needed someone to complete the week, but then they kept me, and the rest is history.”
She and Gerald Gordon as Dr. Nick Bellini made a famous romantic couple on daytime television on doctors.

She appeared on another CBS daytime drama series, Edge of the nightsoon after and on ABC’s A life to live as wealthy Estelle Chadwick in 1983-84 before joining When the world turns.
Her TV credits also include guest appearances on Virginians, Marcus Welby, MD, Law & Order, Hope and believe And Life on Mars.
