Don’t spoil the surprise, it’s not the fare is memorable. The same goes for fashion, especially the vibrant lilac plain dress that Margot, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, wears.
The horror comedy also stars Nicholas Hoult as Tyler, Margot’s gourmet boyfriend; and Ralph Fiennes as celebrity chef Julian Slowick, who serves up an unforgettable dining experience at an upscale restaurant on a remote island.
The silk silhouette is by Fleur du Mal, the luxury lingerie and ready-to-wear brand founded by Jennifer Zuccarini (who also co-founded Kiki de Montparnasse). The brand has also been worn by Rihanna, Jennifer Aniston, Margot Robbie, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Gigi and Bella Hadid, among many other stars.
Taylor-Joy worked directly with costume designer Amy Wescott to select the luxurious 100% silk piece, which retails for around $500 and is finished with a lace V-neckline. In addition to the light purple color seen in the film, charmeuse is available in black and white.
“After that first try on with Anya, it became clear that a dress was the right way to go, allowing for sensuality – but more importantly, vulnerability,” says Wescott. Hollywood Reporter. “The dress feels revealing. Fleur du Mal brings a hand-crafted feel to her approach and a very unique look that allows Anya’s character to stand out in the environment with its lilac and shine.”
Taylor-Joy said before CHEAP that the lilac she chose for Margot “is just a feeling… With Margot, I just see the whole. So when I was contacted by the costume designer, Amy [Westcott]The first thing I say is that I know exactly what that outfit is.”
She continued, “If you really want to learn about it, Margot doesn’t have that much money. So in my head, she has a dress. It’s a bit sexy, but still acceptable. She has a leather jacket that she has had since she was 16 years old. It’s her accessory and protection and it’s really worn out. She also wears big chunky boots because she’ll never be able to afford Louboutins, nor does she want to be on a razor blade. She wants to be strong. And with all of that put together, that sort of color just seems right. It’s the right level of sharpness and harshness, but also quite natural.
Currently, the exact dress Taylor-Joy wears is only available at Fleur Du Mal’s brick-and-mortar store in New York, but you can sign up for a waitlist to receive email notifications when it’s back online. (You can also email Fleur du Mal at boutique@fleurdumal.com for more details on how to order.)
