Who are Taiwan’s formal diplomatic allies? | News

China has stepped up pressure on Taiwan since Tsai Ing-wen was first elected president of the self-ruled island in 2016.

Honduras says it is looking to open official diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.

It has official links with Taiwan and will have to break that relationship if it decides to recognize China, which considers the self-governing island of 23 million people to be its territory and has no right to relations between states.

China has stepped up efforts to isolate the self-ruled island diplomatically since Tsai Ing-wen was first elected president in 2016.

At that time, Taiwan had official relations with 22 countries. Now that number is 14.
