The 67-year-old served as Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.
Abe is the longest serving Prime Minister in Japanese history.
He resigned in 2020, citing health reasons related to recurrent bowel disease.
“I don’t want to make mistakes in important political decisions,” Abe told reporters at the time.
“I’ve decided not to continue sitting in this chair until I can’t confidently respond to everyone’s mandate.”
