Whether you work out every day or are trying to restart a routine, a fitness tracker is a great way to amp up your exercise routine. While we were tested many fitness trackers, over the past few months, we’ve been trying Whoop Strap 4.0 and think it’s an outstanding choice for people who value their health and fitness.
We previously tested Whoop Strap 3.0 and love how it feels like an in-depth personal trainer on your wrist. Now, Whoop has released a new and improved version Whoop Strap 4.0 smaller, smarter, and packed with new features like skin temperature measurement and haptic alerts.
After spending months with it tracking our workouts, sleep, and recovery, here’s what we think of Whoop Strap 4.0.
An in-depth fitness tracker for the serious athlete
Whoop Strap 4.0 gives you unparalleled, in-depth data and analysis about your health. It improves on 3.0 and is a great fitness tracker for those looking to optimize their exercise and recovery routines.
Who, what and how?
Who is this for: The Whoop Strap 4.0 For those who want to optimize their training and recovery. If you’re just looking for a strap to count calories and steps, a tracker like Fitbit Inspire 2 will do the job. However, if you are an athlete or a fitness fanatic who craves in-depth data, then Whoop Strap 4.0 is for you.
What you need to know: Whoop Strap 4.0 is smaller and sleeker than the previous iteration with some added features like skin temperature and blood oxygen readings, as well as a haptic notification alert function. The brand has also released Whoop Body, a clothing line that can hold your Whoop tracker so it doesn’t always have to be on your wrist. However, like the Whoop Strap 3.0, this fitness tracker requires a membership. You can join for $30 per month with a 6-month membership, or commit to a longer membership and pay $18 per month upfront, for a total of $324.
How does it compare: Whoop Strap 4.0 is definitely a worthwhile upgrade from version 3.0. And if you already have a Whoop membership, you can get a free upgrade strap. Compared to other fitness trackers and smartwatches, it provides more detailed information about your health, which is super helpful in tailoring how you approach your exercise on a daily basis, but Whoop Strap 4.0 is purely for fitness. Again, the other big difference is that Whoop Strap is a monthly membership compared to other trackers that you buy outright. Amazon’s Halo and Halo View offer a similar recipe, but instead of just providing more data, they also include recipes and workout classes.
The Whoop Strap 4.0 improved the design of its predecessor with a 33% smaller sensor. When are we? tested 3.0, we didn’t really think it felt bulky on our wrist, but when we wore the 4.0, we immediately felt the difference. It’s much smaller and feels significantly more comfortable.
Whoop has also redesigned the strap and clasp system, which is what keeps the sensor on your wrist. The material of the strap feels much better than the old version with a smoother, softer design. Instead of removing both sides of the clasp from the sensor like you would on the 3.0, the 4.0’s clasp slides out easily so you can spend less time removing your old strap.
In addition to these upgrades to the band itself, Whoop has also created a brand new, waterproof battery pack. This is a big game changer for us because now if you accidentally forget to remove the battery from the strap while washing your hands or washing dishes, you won’t need to worry about it getting damaged. The battery pack still adds a lot of bulk to your wrist as it slides up the strap to charge, but even with it attached, the Whoop 4.0 doesn’t feel bulky. In fact, it’s about the size of a standard smartwatch.
Thankfully, Whoop has kept the same battery life for both the sensor and the removable battery, which means it takes about two hours to charge the pack and an hour and a half to charge the strap. That full charge will give you about five days of juice, so you don’t have to worry about charging it all the time.
The core of Strain, Sleep and Recovery is still excellent
While the physical improvements to version 4.0 are great, Whoop has upgraded the app and tracking to make the new strap more in-depth and easier to use. Whoop 4.0 has an updated sensor configuration that provides more accurate readings, and during testing we didn’t see any drop in measurement accuracy compared to when using Whoop 3.0. 4.0 technology tracks all of our workouts, sleep and recovery incredibly well, even during the toughest sessions on Peloton. Whoop 4.0 can also monitor skin temperature and blood oxygen levels, two measurements that are not above 3.0. This makes it in line with other trackers from Fitbit, Samsung, and Apple.
These extra health measurements add to the already rich amount of data Whoop can give you, but luckily they’ve included another element in the app to make it easy to keep track of it all these data points. The new Health Tracking section opens to a little box on your phone that tells you when your readings – including skin temperature, blood oxygen levels, resting heart rate, respiratory rate and rate variability heart – in the normal range. If not, it will give you a list of potential causes for the change, and if you’re concerned about that – or just need an annual wellness check – you can print and share the report. This fitness tracker is also available to members still using 3.0 (all you need to do is update the app if you haven’t already), however skin temperature and blood oxygen levels won’t show up .
Aside from these added features, the daily experience of using Whoop Strap 4.0 is very similar to 3.0. We wake up each morning, answer a personalized questionnaire about the previous day (we like to track stress, hydration and caffeine and alcohol consumption), check our recovery scores and adjust the day based on how well your body recovers.
We still love Whoop’s stress, sleep, and recovery methods – which you can read about in detail in Whoop Strap Review 3.0 — and think it’s an incredibly useful tool to help prioritize your health. The use of Whoop Strap has made us much more vigilant about our exercise habits and the amount of sleep each night. In fact, it wasn’t until using the Whoop Strap that we finally realized that a good night’s sleep really requires more than 6 hours in bed.
The other big innovation in the 4.0 era is the tactile alert, which you can use as an alarm in the morning. In the Whoop app, you can schedule an alarm to sound when you’ve reached your sleep goal so you can be sure you’re completely rested. If you go to bed late and your sleep goal doesn’t reach 30 minutes after you have to log in to work, there is a feature where you can set the last wake time so you don’t fall asleep.
We used haptic alarms quite a bit during our testing, and loved the idea of optimizing our wake times with our sleep goals. However, more often than not we don’t go to bed early so we wake up at our latest wake time anyway. Another plus of this haptic alarm is that if you sleep with your partner, it’s not a loud alarm like the one on your phone, so your partner will fall asleep easier. The alert itself isn’t customizable, which we’d love to see, however, we think it’s powerful enough for most people but it won’t wake you up.
Tactile alerts are useful, but we can’t wait to see where Whoop puts the feature in the future. We’d love to be able to personalize this haptic notification even further, so we can remind ourselves to drink water, get ready for bed, stand every hour, or even use it as a timer to practice.
Whoop Body untracks your wrist
Along with Whoop Strap 4.0, the brand released a clothing line called Whoop Body. The line includes clothing for both men and women, including tops, pants and even tights, all with small pockets that can accommodate a Whoop sensor so it doesn’t have to be worn on the wrist all the time. your. The position of the sensors in all parts of the Body Whoop has been specially chosen to maintain the accuracy of the tracking device, so unfortunately you are stuck with one.
Wearing shorts is a great experience, as it frees up your wrists so you can wear your watch or just take a break from wearing something on your hand 24/7. Threading the sensor into the shorts was easy, and we didn’t see any difference in performance tracking between shorts and a normal strap.
The boxers themselves feel very nice, with a soft, sporty material. The waistbands are a bit thick and they tend to go up, but they’re not the most uncomfortable panties we’ve ever worn. In fact, we were surprised how little we paid attention to the sensor during our day, even when we were exercising or lying on our side.
The Whoop Body is a great choice if you want all the benefits of wearing a Whoop but don’t want to have to deal with the strap all the time. However, with clothing options starting at $54, it can be pricey to use the Whoop Body as your primary tracker, but it’s a convenient way to mix things up.
One big caveat to consider is Whoop’s pricing structure. You can register as a member for $30 per month with a six-month membershipor long-term savings with a 12- or 18-month membership for $288 and $324 upfront, respectively. The membership comes with a physical strap and access to apps and when Whoop resumes. Continuous improvement – whether it’s adding more features or even releasing updated hardware – it will most likely be included in the membership as well.
