Why did Mrs. Pac-Man’s look change for Arcade Archives: Pac-Land?

Hurry up, what does Miss Pac-Man look like? You must have envisioned a red bow, maybe a pair of hiking boots. Well, that’s Miss Pac-Man’s version, gradually disappear thanks to a byzantine dispute related to Bandai Namco and AtGames, has been changed in the new release of Pac-Land out today – and probably next month when it comes out Pac-Man Plus Museuma classic collection also Pac-Land.

Graphic artist Nicholas Caballero, Paraguayan, note on Twitter on Wednesday that the personified Mrs. Pac-Man appeared in 1984 Pac-Land Instead, Bandai Namco calls Pac-Mom: She wears a pink hat, gloves, and heels instead of a red bow, orange gloves, and red boots. The Baby Pac has had the palette swapped out, for good measure, replacing the bow with a flower and removing the pacifier.

So what for? Well, let’s go back to 2019, when Bandai Namco sued AtGames, the maker of mini-game consoles and arcade cabinets who worked on the 2016 Genesis/Mega Drive for Sega didn’t win them any friends. Among other things, Bandai Namco accused AtGames of interfering with the publisher’s negotiations with her original creators of Pac-Man – a group of seven MIT classmates calling themselves General Computer Corporation – to buy their copyright.

Lo and behold, AtGames itself ended up buying up those royalties, meaning that, later on, if Bandai Namco released anything with Miss Pac-Man (or Baby Pac) in it, it would owe AtGames , who they are now. Sue. (Note: These rights will be paid out whenever the work is used; Bandai Namco retains full title and control over Mrs. Pac-Man as an intellectual property and may unilaterally reproduce it. produce any product including grandma.)

Bandai Namco alleges some illegal use of their intellectual property; AtGames said Bandai Namco is punishing it for a separate agreement with disgruntled rights holders Bandai Namco didn’t do anything with Ms. Pac-Man in it. Lawsuit resolved in November 2020but AtGames still owns the royalties to Mrs. Pac-Man.

Therefore, when Arcade Archives re-released Pac-Land appeared on the Nintendo eShop today, Pac-Mom joined the role.

Pac-Mom also seems to be the version Pac-Man Museum More, launching at the end of May, will use. That anthology features 14 games from the Pac-Man series, going all the way back to the original 1980s – but to 1981 Mrs. Pac-Man is, you guessed it, not included. (The modified Pac-Mom and Baby Pac will apparently be collectibles that one can earn to decorate their in-game case, as shown in Pac-Man Museum More‘ intro video.)

There are no console re-releases of Mrs. Pac-Man since the forerunner of this collection, 2014 Pac-Man Museumfor PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360. It’s two years after Bandai Namco turned down AtGames’ pitch to make it happen. Mrs. Pac-Man small cabinet, which is related to the allegations brought in the 2019 lawsuit.

It was rumored that the publisher didn’t want to do anything for which they would owe royalties, and Miss Pac’s lack of work is circumstantial proof of that. Steve Golson, one of the original designers, an hour-long autopsy above Mrs. Pac-Man at Game Developers Conference 2016, where he discussed the puppet royalties agreement the two sides had reached.

Polygon has reached out to representatives of both Bandai Namco Entertainment America and the original GCC creators, for further comment.
