Why did the Canadians fire GM Marc Bergevin? Montreal seeks ‘new vision’ 5 months after Stanley Cup Final

Less than a year after reaching the Stanley Cup Finals, the Canadians are making big changes to their hockey practice.

Montreal announced on Sunday that it will replace its general manager, Marc Bergevin, as well as two other senior members of its main office, including assistant GM Trevor Timmins and senior VP Paul Wilson.

“On behalf of me and the organization, I would like to thank Marc Bergevin, Trevor Timmins and Paul Wilson for their passion and commitment to our Club over the years,” said owner of Canada, Geoff Molson said in a statement. “Their relentless work has allowed our fans to experience many memorable moments, including last summer’s play-offs that culminated in the Stanley Cup Final. We wish them all the best. They both achieved well-deserved success in their pursuit of their careers.”

Ownership of Canadianiens hopes that this will turn the tide in Montreal. But why did they make these decisions right after the Stanley Cup? Here’s everything you need to know about Montreal’s organizational changes, explained.

Why did the Canadians fire Marc Bergevin?

Simply, the Canadian team has fallen short of expectations this year. They entered the Stanley Cup during the 2020-21 season despite barely reaching the knockout stages as the fourth seed of the all-Canada tournament set for the shortened season.

Canada won the first three series in the Stanley Cup knockout despite being underrated in each series. They made it to the finals before Lightning took them down in 5 games.

Montreal has not been able to reproduce the miracle to start the 2021-22 NHL season. The team struggled to start the 2021-22 NHL season and take second to last place in the Atlantic Division. They had a record of 9-15-2 (14 points) before the match.

Bergevin was the NHL’s fifth longest-serving GM before being fired. The Canadian made six play-offs under his watch and reached just one Stanley Cup Final. That was enough for Molson to call for leadership change.

“The time has come for a leadership change in our hockey operations that delivers a new vision and will allow our fans and partners to continue to support our team,” Molson said. Dance for a championship team.

Bergevin responded in a statement that he was grateful for his time in Montreal. He expressed gratitude to Molson, his fans and team as well as the players.

“I’m proud of the legacy I left in the organization” Bergevin said. “The current team is much better than the results show, and I believe that my successors will be able to take up the challenge.”

Who will replace Marc Bergevin with Canada?

The Canadian hired Jeff Gorton as the team’s Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations. Gorton’s title is slightly different from that of Bergevin, who served as CEO and GM, but essentially, they operate in the same back-office role.

Gorton previously served as Rangers GM from 2015 to 2021. New York only reached the knockout stages in three of Gorton’s six seasons in charge of Rangers and never made it past the second round of the post-season.

Gorton was also the interim GM of Bruins for a few months in 2006. He was responsible for the acquisitions of Tuukka Rask, Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard during that time.

Canadians will also hire a new GM. According to the press release announcing the dismissal Bergevin has begun a search for a candidate who speaks both English and French.
