Why Questlove is the right director for Doc – The Hollywood Reporter

Maintaining the integrity of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival archival footage with performances from artists including Nina Simone, Sly and Family Stone, and Stevie Wonder was paramount in the making of Ahmir “Questlove” ” Thompson’s Summer of the Soul (…or, When the Revolution Couldn’t Be Televised).

As for the Hulu musical and the Black historical documentary, this documentary comes with new interviews edited by Joshua L. Pearson. As for the audio, recording mixer Paul Hsu said, “The whole task was really to keep that woven structure very much alive.

“It’s a bit of an action where you have to maintain that energy throughout the whole movie,” he added. “It’s very artistic in the sense that there’s a lot of information, there’s a lot of interviews and there’s a lot of music. You have to maintain this continuity throughout the entire movie.”

The late TV doctor Hal Tulchin produced and directed the original footage of the festival, which was then stored in his basement for half a century. As the project progressed, music mixer Jimmy Douglass recovered about 40 hours of 2-inch video tape “with a light touch… very good recordings,” said Hsu, who created the mix. 5.1 surround sound for movies so “you can feel the music even when we’re not on stage. ”

Hsu describes his approach to the mix as “all dialogue, all music,” which he admits sounds obvious, “but it’s a lot harder to achieve than it sounds.” . Are from [in the interviews] really important. You have to feel what they’re saying, but the music is also the most important. So how do I keep those two alive? That’s definitely something that Ahmir and I talked about from the very beginning. How do you keep those two consistent and still sound good and keep your audience engaged? ”

Hsu said Thompson is an “incredible” music historian and the right director for the film. “The importance of each musician in those activities is clear and understood by [Thompson],” said Hsu. “There are very few people who could have made this movie the way he did. In a way, my job really feels somehow to keep moving forward, helping it bloom and making you feel as though you’re really there. “
