Two-time Olympic figure skater Vincent Zhou will not attend the 2022 Winter Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19, he revealed Monday.

Zhou helped the United States win a silver medal in the team event in Beijing and is expected to compete in the individual portion of the competition. The positive test results forced Zhou to withdraw, and he posted an emotional Instagram video lament the events.

“It seems pretty far-fetched to all that it would happen to myself, and that’s not only because I’m still processing this turn of events but also because I’ve done everything in my power to do so. ability to stay free of COVID since the beginning of the pandemic,” Zhou said.

“I’ve taken all possible precautions. I’ve isolated myself so much that the loneliness I’ve felt over the past month or two has been crushing at times.”

The 21-year-old is widely expected to compete for a medal alongside compatriot Nathan Chen of the US and two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan.

Zhou made his Olympic debut in 2018 in Pyeongchang but failed to win a medal, placing sixth overall.
