Why Yalitza Aparicio “decided” to continue acting after Roma
In the mission.
Yalitza Aparicio went from a preschool teacher to an Oscar-nominated actress after starring in Alfonso Cuaron2018 drama Rome. Now, she is continuing her acting career pursuing roles that “give visibility and voice to indigenous communities.”
As Aparicio explains in E!’s “Ones to Watch” series, which celebrates indigenous heritage, she spends her time choosing between projects.
“I feel there must be consistency between my words and actions,” continued the actress, who is of Triqui and Mixtec descent. “And the projects I’m coming up with have a lot to do with the importance of how natives are portrayed on screen.”
Most recently, Aparicio starred in the Hulu short film Hijas de brujas—A project she describes as “a bit complicated for me.”
Why? Her character has an English part.
“Actually, most of the short films were used in English, but then there was a series of changes in development,” explains Aparicio, recalling the early “very stressful” time. “But with those stresses, I was accompanied by hope and enthusiasm to learn and speak another language.”
