U.S. Freeway 101, which stretches from California via Washington State, was closed close to Santa Barbara after the Alisal Fireplace erupted Monday afternoon within the Los Padres Nationwide Forest, native and federal authorities mentioned.
The fireplace — which hurled flames and embers a mile forward amid 35 mph wind gusts — had grown to 1,000 acres by Monday evening because it approached the Pacific Ocean, NBC affiliate KSBY reported.
Dramatic video captured by the station confirmed towering flames burning towards the freeway. Parks, seashores and campgrounds have been evacuated as the hearth rapidly unfold.
The fireplace ignited as a big swath of the state was positioned underneath a purple flag warning, with fire-friendly climate predicted by forecasters.
