Will Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Be Successful?

Meta Description: Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are coming out in November. Read more to discover whether these ninth-generation games will be successful or not.

Pokémon fans are getting very excited about the release of the new games Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. Launching on 18 November, these new titles in the series will introduce plenty of new cute critters and powerful monsters for players to catch and battle with. Several trailers have been released, giving fans a glimpse of the new Paldea region and a taste of what the games will have to offer.

But will these games be successful? Will they sell as well as previous releases? And will they be well regarded by long-term fans of the franchise?

Commercial Success

There’s no doubt that Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will sell millions of copies each. It would take a lot for a main series Pokémon game not to be commercially successful.

Pokémon is the world’s biggest media franchise since being created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996, it’s gone on to become a cultural powerhouse with lots of different parts to it. The video games are key, but there’s also a huge range of other products, from films and anime series to trading cards, merchandise, and more. Though video games account for about a quarter of the franchise’s total revenue, they’re the vehicle that drives it and keeps it going.

These new games mark the beginning of Pokémon’s ninth generation. Each generation starts with a pair of games introducing a new region, a host of new Pokémon, with many new characters and gameplay features.

The first eighth generation games, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield were released on 15 November 2019. As of March 2022, they’ve sold 24.27 million copies between them. This makes them the franchise’s biggest-selling games since the very first pair of games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

Other games released as part of the eighth generation have also been hits. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl, remakes of the main fourth-generation games, sold 14.65 million copies less than half a year after coming out. The newest one, Pokémon Legends: Arceus, a standalone title, has shifted more than 12 million copies to date.

Critical Success

Fans have wanted an open-world Pokémon game for quite some time now. The eighth generation games took a step in this direction with the Wild Area, an open area that connects several towns and cities on the map. The most recent title, Pokémon: Legends Arceus, builds on that, with its map split into five large, open areas and a central hub. Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will be completely open and free, with everything on the map blending together seamlessly. Gameplay will no longer be linear as it has been in previous games, as the eight gyms can be challenged in any order.

Part of what makes Pokémon games so successful is that there’s a winning formula the developers stick to. The main games in the series are all about exploring a region, catching Pokémon, taking part in battles, defeating the enemy, and ultimately becoming the best trainer.

Many other popular game developers stick to whatever goes down well with the public. Top providers have embraced 3D graphics, special effects, and features that increase the social interaction of gaming. This has been seen across the gaming arena, whether it’s PC, console, or online gambling games. Online slots are a great example. Nowadays, you can find all types of themed slots with high-quality graphics, storytelling, and even good music – even if the main focus remains on spinning the reels and landing matching symbols to win. If you want to discover these slots for yourself and admire the graphics, you can find new casino bonuses to play these games for free. Other offers include deposit bonuses, where you make a deposit and receive free bonus money, and free spins offer, where you receive free spins to use on specific slots. Take advantage of these offers to try out the games first-hand, all while testing the new and improved gaming world.

Even though Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are still going to be about exploring, catching, and battling, they’re taking a giant leap by offering open-world gameplay. This is what fans have been clamouring for, and if the games are going to be critical successes, the core Pokémon features have to fully integrate with the open-world system in a natural and logical way.

Let’s Wait and See

While the games will undoubtedly be huge sellers, it remains to be seen whether they’ll go down well with critics and fans alike. Expectations are running high, and a lot is riding on these games. Will their open-world gameplay reinvigorate Pokémon and provide a blueprint for future games? Or will the interconnected region of Paldea fail to impress? Time will only tell.
