Will Smith Apologizes To The Academy And His Nominees After A Physical Change With Chris Rock
In his Best Actor acceptance speech, Will Smith apologized to the Academy and all its nominees after he assaulted Chris Rock live on stage. Right after he left the audience and viewers at home in complete shock, when he stepped forward and punched Chris Rock in the face, Will Smith once again took the stage to accept the award for Best Actor – and then he apologized.
After crying throughout his entire speech, Will Smith offered an apology to everyone… except Chris Rock, saying:
“I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. It’s a beautiful moment and I’m not crying because winning an award, it’s not winning an award for me.”
Will Smith continued, adding:
“The art of imitating life, I look like a crazy dad. Love will make you do crazy things. I know to be able to do what we do, you have to be able to abuse, you have to be able to get people crazy about you. In this business, you have to have people who don’t respect you and you have to pretend it’s okay… Denzel Washington said to me a few minutes ago, “At your highest point, be careful. Careful, that’s when the devil comes looking for you.”
As we previously reported, Will Smith won his first Academy Award for Best Actor. Nominated for his role as the father of Venus and Serena Williams in ‘King Richard’, he is officially an Oscar winner.
