Will Smith resigns from Academy membership – The Hollywood Reporter
Will Smith, after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars on Sunday, has decided to step down as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Smith issued a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter on Friday afternoon.
“I have responded directly to the Academy’s disciplinary notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct. My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful, and inexplicable. The list of people I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all present and the global audience back home,” Smith said.
The statement continued, “I have betrayed the trust of the Academy. I have deprived other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be honored for their extraordinary work. I’m hurt. I want to focus back on the people who deserve attention for their accomplishments and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. I will therefore resign as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any other consequences the Board deems appropriate. . ”
More will come.
