Another rewarding holiday season for Winnipeg retailers during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and some are turning to new strategies that have proven successful.

Kari England of Exchange County flagship store Toad Hall Toys said initiatives her store first launched due to the pandemic, like $5 delivery and curbside pickup, will remain still exist.

The size of her store and its 45-year history have helped avoid supply chain challenges to date, she said. But she realizes that not all businesses are so lucky.

“I have a lot of relationships in the industry that I’ve built over the years, so I can call up some people and say, ‘this is where I’m a little bit lacking. How can you help me here? ‘

“So the longevity and good interpersonal relationships with other companies, I think put us in a really great position.”

England says she’s seen a lot of customers shopping online for the first time in 2020, stopping by the store.

“I hear a lot of people walking into a store saying, ‘We found you online last year. We wanted to go into the store and see what it’s really like inside’. “

According to one Winnipeg restaurateur, local restaurants are being hit by supply chain challenges and a lack of holiday reservations.

Kristjan Kristjansson of Brazen Hall Kitchen told 680 CJOB that it’s nearly impossible to get enough fresh produce right now – especially when it comes to seafood.

“To get the right amount of shrimp or lobster or fresh fish – that is becoming a real challenge for a lot of restaurants,” he said.

“The people who will be hurt the most are the people who have built their businesses around that beautiful model.”

Kristjansson said he’s not sure what long-term strategies can be put in place to ensure the issue doesn’t get out of hand.

Meanwhile, Brazen Hall is one of those eateries in Winnipeg that makes holiday shopping a little easier – with some of the proceeds going to charity.

Pembina Highway, East India Company, Silver Heights Restaurant and Pasquale’s are offering a gift card promotion where 20% of card sales go to mental health resources at Victoria General Hospital .

Charities are struggling due to the pandemic, and his restaurant is happy to be a part of the project, Kristjansson said.

“That’s a problem for philanthropy right now – after there’s no golf tournament and all sorts of hardships getting people together to find charitable reasons to donate.”
