Winter tires mandatory on most B.C. highways starting Oct. 1 – BC


Beginning Friday, drivers are required to have snow tires on their automobile for journey on the vast majority of highways in British Columbia.

Accepted winter tires are essential to journey on the next highways:

  • All highways within the North
  • All highways within the Inside
  • Sections of some highways on the South Coast, together with the Sea to Sky Freeway
  • Sections of some highways on Vancouver Island, together with the Malahat and Highways 4, 14 and 28.

Accepted tires carry both the M+S (mud and snow) or mountain/snowflake symbol and should have at the least 3.5 millimetres of tread.

Drivers caught with out the right tires on designated routes may face a positive of $121.

Business automobile operators are required to hold chains on most routes within the province, as indicated by roadside indicators. Chains usually are not required on the Decrease Mainland and most of Vancouver Island.
