A Wisconsin band teacher is accused of having an affair with an underage girl.

Zachary Wendt, 38, of Burlington, faces a number of charges.

He made his debut Thursday afternoon at the Racine County Courthouse.

Wendt is a band teacher at Wheatland Central School in Burlington.

In a statement to parents, the school district said he was suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

The district said the charges do not include a Wheatland student.

According to the criminal complaint, Wendt dated the 16-year-old victim in February 2021.

He told her he was 20 years old, the lawsuit said.

The victim told police Wendt had texted her and the two exchanged sexual messages.

The lawsuit says Wendt picked up the girl in March and took her to his home, where he provided her with alcohol and the two had sex.

The two had sex again in May or June, the lawsuit said.

The victim told police she knew Wendt from a business where he taught music.

The store’s website identifies Wendt as a Marine and a former leader of the Marines Band.

The complaint says that in November, Wendt asked the girl to send him pictures of her wearing camouflage.

Detectives said they had reviewed the photos and that the girl had exposed her body parts.

According to the lawsuit, Wendt told the victim not to say anything about their relationship because he would lose the child.

He also said he would send some of his students to the teenagers to study.

Police said they collected evidence at Wendt’s home, including a cell phone and a laptop computer.

It is not clear where or how the two met.

No other details have been released.

Burlington Police said they were informed of the suspect-victim relationship through an online tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent on Tuesday.

Wendt was charged with two counts of copulating with a child 16 years of age or older by an actor 19 years of age or older, two counts of sexual assault of a child by someone who worked or volunteered with children, one count of one count of exposing genitals, pubic area, or intimate parts and three counts of possession of child pornography.

He was ordered to be held at the Racine County Jail on $500,000 bail.

That’s double what a prosecutor originally asked for.

Wendt was scheduled to appear in court again next Thursday.

If convicted, he faces up to 75 years in prison.

Police said they do not know if there are any more victims.

The district said it postponed the band 5-8 performance at the middle school Thursday following Wendt’s arrest.

“School officials and district counselors will be on hand to answer questions students may have over the next several days,” a notice to parents said.
