Wisconsin community wears purple in memory of slain boy

The small town of Sheboygan Falls is honoring an 8-year-old boy who died after police said he was beaten by his mother. On Monday, members of the community wore purple in memory of Oliver. “I didn’t want to believe it in our small town at first, but those things happen here too, I guess,” says Barb Graf. “We’re just kind, said Savannah Smogoleski, her daughter wears a purple shirt, purple pants, and purple hair tie to school. From groups like the Sheboygan Falls Town Fire Department there are people in nearby towns wearing them. “We have some tough days ahead for our families, our students, our staff,” said school director Annalee Bennin, who doesn’t know Oliver or his family, she said. She dressed purple for Graf told WISN 12. According to the GoFundMe page, Oliver’s uncle said the boy had donated his organs to four people who were waiting. Seven said, “The initial reaction I would say was strangulation,” Miller said. “Sheboygan County Sheriff is the agency that presided over that.” Police did not release her name.

The small town of Sheboygan Falls is honoring an 8-year-old boy who died after police said he was beaten by his mother.

Oliver Hitchcock died two days after being found in his family’s apartment unresponsive.

Second graders’ favorite color is purple.

On Monday, community members wore purple in memory of Oliver.

“I didn’t want to believe it at first in our small town, but those things happen here too, I guess,” says Barb Graf.

“We just wanted to get together and show the community that we are here for them,” said Savannah Smogoleski.

She said her daughter wears purple shirt, purple pants and purple hair tie to school.

It was in response to social media posts from groups like the Sheboygan Falls Township Fire Department that had people in close quarters dressed in purple.

“We have difficult days ahead for our families, our students, our staff,” said school superintendent Annalee Bennin.

Graf says she doesn’t know Oliver or his family.

She said she wears purple to show support.

“I am keeping them in my thoughts and prayers,” Graf told WISN 12.

According to a GoFundMe page, Oliver’s uncle said that the boy had donated his organs to 4 people who were waiting.

A vigil is taking place on Sunday evening.

“The initial reaction I would say was strangulation,” Sheriff Eric Miller said Saturday.

Prosecutors are expected to charge Oliver’s mother with first-degree murder and attempted murder.

“The second count is something that came up during the investigation,” Miller said. “The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency on that matter.”

Police have not released her name.

She was hospitalized with self-inflicted injuries but was later released to the Sheboygan County Jail.
