Woman, friend delivering unexpected delivery along I-70 in western Kansas
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – It was the last place a Kansas woman gave birth.
Beau and Michelle Drexler’s baby boy, Miles, was less than three weeks away when Michelle started having mild contractions on Dec. 4. The plan was to head straight to Rooks County Hospital in Plainville in a family friend’s pickup truck. family.
Within minutes of leaving her home in Ellis, Michelle broke water while on I-70. Aminda Brunner, who was driving, pulled over and called 911, but baby Miles was determined to have been born. On I-70, just east of the Exit 153 signpost heading east to Hays, is where he will enter this world.
What about dad? He thought he was being pranked.
“My sister and I both felt like they were playing a YouTube video or something in the background because it was a bit quiet rather than a little crying in the background. And then when Aminda goes on and her voice panics, it’s like, ‘Oh no! We have to go. ‘” Beau recalled.
Aminda said: “In my wildest dreams, I never imagined it. “You know carrying my best friend’s baby, let alone an I-70 in my truck.”
Miles’ grandmother, Lori Graham, said she still couldn’t believe it.
“When you think about it, you just really don’t believe your grandkids were born on the side of the interstate,” she said.
The family said after Michelle and Miles are both healthy and working well.
