Nina Jane Patel, a researcher visiting a new Metaverse app, claims her profile picture was mostly sexually assaulted. It took her less than 60 seconds for her to be sexually and verbally harassed in Horizon Worlds, a game developed for Oculus. Mark Zuckerberg The mastermind she revealed. “A group of male avatars surrounded me and started touching my profile picture while taking a selfie,” she recalls. “I tried to move away but they ran after me, laughing and shouting. They were relentless.” Patel, a psychotherapist and metaverse researcher, quickly took off his headphones.
Patel added:
“When I left, they shouted: ‘Don’t pretend you don’t love it; this is why you come here. ‘”
The 21-year-old works for SumOfUs — a nonprofit advocacy group that wants to blame Mark Zuckerberg — as a researcher. SumOfUs included a clip of the event in this month’s report, focusing on sexual violence, hate speech, and content moderation issues at Meta.

Meta’s Horizon apps offer a wide range of virtual activities if you have a Facebook login and a headset. The female researcher who just entered the Horizon app curiously described the encounter as “very disorienting” and “disturbing”. Research conducted by the Center against Digital Hate (CCD) in December uncovered more than 100 potential violations against Meta. In addition to sexual harassment and assault, abuse highlighted in the report included racism, bullying, threats of violence, and “content mocking the 9/11 terrorist attacks.” The organization advises that the platform is not safe for children.
