Wayne Mardle says teenager Beau Greaves “excellently acquitted” on her Alexandra Palace debut, while rival Willie O’Connor believes she has an “open future”.
Greaves failed 3-0 in her historic appearance at the World Darts Championshipp, with O’Connor being too strong in their first-round clash.
The 18-year-old is the youngest woman to enter the tournament and has been in dominant form in the PDC Women’s Series, but she was unable to deal a blow to her Irish opponent.
“I’m really happy for Beau because she came here and played so well. Yes, I was disappointed when she lost, of course, but Willie organized it pretty well and wasn’t drawn into any of that. what.”
Wayne Mardle on Beau Greaves
Her maiden looks began with eye-catching style as she hit 120 checks and despite another impressive result of 122 in the second set, O’Connor was ruthless on the radar of Greaves wandering in the final set.
Speaking to host Emma Paton, ‘Hawaii 501’ Mardle said: “I can’t point to any negative points. In the end, she lost her last six legs in an unbelievable way and it seems like not so.
“Usually when someone is beaten 3-0, they’re second best, but I think the only time she’s second best is in the last set.”
“Beau did the right thing. Unfortunately, there were too many hits of 60 or 59 and in the end they just caught up with her.
“As a result, missed 161, missed 32, just one dart here and there made all the difference. She acquitted brilliantly.
“I hope she goes away thinking she played well and is comfortable. She looks great and the action is deadly – so fluid and so good.
“Willie knew he was involved in an absolute brawl. Even though the score was 3-0, the score in his favor made it seem simple, and it certainly wasn’t.”
Mardle added: “I’m really happy for Beau because she came here and played really well. Of course, I was very disappointed when she lost, but Willie organized the game quite well and wasn’t drawn in. any game.” it.”
‘I’m William O’Nerves’ I ‘She Got My Respect’
O’Connor applauded Greaves for her performance and joked that he was “William O’Nerves” on the field against the teenager from Doncaster.
“She definitely had her chances but she didn’t take them. It just came to me,” he said. “She’s thrown great stuff and she has a huge future ahead of her. Hopefully this is the last time I play her for a long time.
“I don’t need this attention. I just want to sneak into a corner and do my own thing. I don’t want that draw. I don’t think anyone wants that draw. She won everything. Nobody wanted that. That smoke, especially not me!
“I play against the best players in the world every week so there’s nothing she can do that I haven’t seen. I go out to win and that’s the most important thing.”
O’Connor added: “I’m a very stressed person. I’m William O’Nerves. She played brilliantly. A little bit of my experience got me through.”
“I don’t look at anything that she has ever done but she will only get better with time. She has earned my respect.”
