He also finished 94 and 98 to take command in the second set, before punishing Wright’s misses to double the lead in the match.
Scores of 67 and 54 saw ‘Mighty Mike’ extend his winning streak to eight feet before Wright finally took the lead by dropping 73 to pull back 2-1 in the third set.
However, the Scotsman paid the price when he missed the chance to level the score as Van Gerwen ended the match to close another match in the final.
He then finished 124 to open the fourth set, double 16 to make it 2-0 and penalize Wright’s further misses to win the top.
Van Gerwen, who also saw off Gary Anderson, Stephen Bunting and Chris Dobey at Leicester this week said: “Given my performance over the last few days, I hope to win, but you still have to do it first. someone like Peter Wright. .
“He didn’t look good and I don’t know what happened there, but you need to take advantage of that.
“He’s a phenomenal player but he didn’t show up tonight and I did the right things for myself at the right time. The first doors, I played well and that gives I confidence.”
Van Gerwen won the Premier League and World Cup titles this year, and has recovered from his own wrist surgery to return to his peak form and remain silent on his doubts.
“I don’t need to justify myself,” he added. “Everybody knew what I was capable of, and when Michael was there, everyone was scared.
“I have to win my matches and I hope I can continue to perform like this tomorrow.
“When I won the Premier League, I didn’t play my A and I didn’t really play my A in the World Match but I still won it. Now I think I played some darts. well and I’m really happy for myself.”
Aspinall ended No 1 Price’s bid to reach the World Grand Prix final for the third time in a row in the first semi-final.
‘The Asp’ started brighter and scored 14 goals and finished 113 as he set the opening score at 3-1, but Price responded with 121 kicks 12 on the way to the game. Monday.
However, Aspinall hit 13 darts as he went ahead again in the match, before two darts missed in a 16-shot from Price allowing the Stockport throw-in to land a double. five when he made it 3-1 in the match.
Price flexed his muscles with two massive consecutive shots including a 127 return hit to the bull, but despite his big shots, Aspinall ended up knocking him out. .
Aspinall then came close to winning the fifth set, leading 2-1 before Price leveled, and when the former UK Open and US Darts Masters champions missed a dart in the doubles match 16, the 2020 winner won 117 checks to grab the bet and keep his hopes alive.
Price then cleared 107 and 127 on successive legs to take the lead in the sixth second leg, but a missed double allowed Aspinall to level the score before a 13-man saw him almost ended up winning.
“To be in the World Grand Prix final, I was completely above cloud nine,” said Aspinall, who achieved a clinical rate of 56% of his doubles in the match.
“It means a lot. I’ve put in a lot of effort since the injury and worked really hard. Finally, I’m back in the finals of a major and I’m having a lot of fun.
“I thought I should have won 4-1 but I didn’t – my nerves hurt and Gezzy, when needed, hit some great shots.
“I thought he would go on and his doubles would start to go through, but that didn’t happen; I don’t know why and I’m so grateful I won.”
Nathan will have to get a sharp boost, but has he gotten the game yet? Right! He knew that he was the underdog and that he was the underdog in the whole event but he had faith. He knows what needs to be done and he knows he will probably have to play better tomorrow than he did tonight. The chances he gets tomorrow won’t be much but all he can do is come here and do his best. Can he win it? That’s right, he can! But he’ll probably have to do what Robert Thornton did in 2015 and that’s been a resounding success and may have had a bit of luck without Michael van Gerwen. I think that’s probably what needs to happen.
