World Obesity Day 2022: “Everybody Needs Action”

Obesity is a metabolic condition involving an abnormal or excessive accumulation of body fat that can cause negative health effects.

Body mass index (BMI – a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2)) is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity.

A BMI value greater than or equal to 25 is considered overweight and greater than or equal to 30 is called obese according to WHO (World Health Organization).

Burden of obesity

Nearly 21% of women and 19% of men were overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m2) according to NFHS-4 (National Family Health Survey India-4, 2015-16). More than that, Childhood obesity rate is estimated to increase by 60% over the next decade, thus affecting 250 million children by 2030.

Obesity, if left untreated, can manifest as a risk factors for various cardiovascular and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and even cancer.

It is therefore important for governments, health services and the public to focus on cost-effective measures to manage, treat and prevent obesity. The World Health Organization has set out to achieve a Reduce the relative NCD mortality by 25% by stopping the rise in obesity by 2025.

History of World Obesity Day

The World Obesity Federation (a professional membership of health, science and research working closely with WHO and the Lancet Commission) has established the first ever World Obesity Day as an annual campaign. in 2015.

Originally, it was held on October 11 every year. However, from 2020, this date has been changed to March 4.

The mission of the global event remains to launch worldwide efforts to reduce, treat and prevent obesity.

Theme 2022

The theme of this year’s World Obesity Day 2022 is ‘Everybody needs action’.

The day is designated to promote awareness of the burden and impact of obesity and collective life-changing measures to be taken at the local, national and global levels. This can help build a healthier society.

Goals of World Obesity Day

The goals of World Obesity Day are:

Enhance a better understanding of the barriers to obesity prevention and thereby shape ways to overcome it.

Stop the rise in obesity by 2025 by encouraging governments to take urgent action.

Spreading global best practices and advocacy experiences related to obesity.

Develop collaborative projects from member associations and advocates against obesity-related issues.

Prevent Obesity!

One can put forward initiatives to prevent obesity on this global day:

Spread obesity awareness and knowledge through posters, global meetups, campaigns, social media and other activities.

Understand the challenges of fighting obesity for better management.

Change your dietary habits in case of overweight or obesity. You should consult your doctor before switching to a change.

Consume a minimum of five to six servings of fruits and vegetables per day; Avoid processed foods.

Practice a daily exercise routine or engage in physical activities; Avoid sedentary lifestyle.

Pay attention to the amount of calories you take in for balance.

Fight the stigma – abuse or discrimination of obesity!
