World record for longest soul train broken in Harlem – CBS New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – As part of the Soul Train Awards weekend in Harlem, the BET team made an official attempt to break the world record for longest soul train track.

Hundreds of dancers of all ages lined up at Marcus Garvey Park to test their stuff. Bernard Dove’s love for dance began with Harlem, in Apollo Theater on stage with James Brown.

“I did like halving and everyone was screaming and it was like I tasted blood,” said the 81-year-old, “and I say now I know this is what I want to do.”

Along with the original dancers on iconic TV shows are some who don’t even live in the era of Apollo and the Soul Train. Parents bring their kids, and Brooklyn United’s marching band is packed with excited young musicians.

The 40+ Double Dutch Club is lined up for the Soul Train for the first time. A group of women over 40 from all over the country, they guide their inner child, with their skipping skills on full display.

Team member Pamela Robinson said: “The soul train is part of our culture and part of our history, so we have to be part of it.”

Cheering everyone up is Angela Simmons, whose father Rev. Run has performed on both Soul Train and Apollo.

“It’s crazy that it has a full circle,” said Simmons. “This is an icon. That’s great.”

A Guinness World Records official is also keeping a close eye on the dancers. They had to line up a 40-foot track in pairs to add up the count.

The number to beat is 426. It was a close call, but with the help of the surrounding community, police officers and passersby, the world record was broken at the Park Marcus Garvey with a total of 536 dancers. However, there is one thing that has never been laid down. Everyone had a great time doing it.
