Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week, you know that the biggest news in gaming right now revolves around Microsoft’s purchase of Activision Blizzard, publisher of franchises like Call of Duty, Warcraft, Skylanders and Crash Bandicoot.

The $68.7 billion acquisition made people start to guess who is next in this industry fusion game and in an interview with washington articles, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has stated that he “trusts” traditional rivals Sony and Nintendo but is wary of outside influences encroaching on games.

When talking about Sony and Nintendo, Spencer said:

They have a long history in video games. Nintendo won’t do anything that harms gaming in the long run because that’s their business. So is Sony and I trust them. … Valve too. When we look at Microsoft’s other big tech competitors: Google has search and Chrome, Amazon has shopping, Facebook has social, all these massive consumer businesses. … The discussion we had internally, where those things matter to other tech companies to the number of consumers they reach, the game could be that for us. .

Spencer has guaranteed that Microsoft intends to forge a positive relationship with its competitors, but with the likes of Google, Meta, Apple, Netflix and Amazon all trying to break into the gaming industry, it’s easy. sees Microsoft’s recent purchase as a way of cementing its position as the leading light in the gaming sector. Of course, it remains to be seen if Microsoft’s acquisition will really be a positive move for the games industry.

Spencer adds that Microsoft’s approach is moving away from the concept of a single platform and instead adopting a device agnostic strategy:

I think we have a unique perspective, it’s not about how things have to run on a single device or platform. It’s the turning point that really led us to view gaming as a consumer opportunity that could have the same impact on Microsoft that a number of other large-scale consumer businesses did on other major tech competitors. And it’s great to see the support we’ve had from the company and the board.
