Volvo on Friday announced several updates to its EV pair in Europe, but there was no confirmation that the same changes would be applied to the US market.
The Rechargeable Volvo XC40 receives a number of styling tweaks, including a new front grille and grille, and new adaptive LED headlights. These changes align more closely with the XC40 Recharge to its sibling, the C40 Recharge. New interior trim options, exterior colors and wheel styles round out the changes.
Volvo has yet to confirm these changes for the US. In fact, you can’t even build an XC40 Recharge on Volvo’s online configurator in the US.

Although not mentioned in Volvo’s announcement, note that the 2022 XC40 Recharge earns higher EPA range and efficiency numbers than it did in 2021. The 2022 model is rated at Range 223 miles and 85 MPGe combined (92 MPGe city, 79 MPGe highway), compared to the 2021 model’s 208 miles and 79 MPGe combined (85 MPGe city, 72 MPGe highway).
Meanwhile, the C40 Recharge, a new single-engine variant alongside the existing dual-engine version. The C40 Recharge front-wheel drive single-cylinder has a 69 kWh battery pack, with an estimated range of 269 miles during the European WLTP test cycle, according to Volvo.
The automaker already offers the single-engine XC40 Charger in Europe and now says the addition of the single-engine C40 Recharge will bring the total number of EV variants to four. In the US, however, the XC40 Recharge has so far only been offered as a dual-engine.
