You Won’t Believe HBO Spent on a GoT Prequel
Money must grow on the Weirwood tree for HBO!
Based on James Andrew Millernew book of, Tinderbox: HBO’s ruthless pursuit of new frontiers, the network spent more than $30 million on piloting a prequel series starring Naomi watts which unfortunately was not selected to go to the series.
An unnamed fantasy prequel, set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, intend to have Jane Goldman like showrunner and SJ Clarkson as a director. But after watching a clip of the pilot, the former president of WarnerMedia Bob Greenblatt the project is not working properly.
“They spent more than 30 million dollars on a Game of Thrones Greenblatt says in Miller’s book. [HBO chief content officer] Casey [Bloys], ‘This just doesn’t work and I don’t think it sets the stage for the original series.’ And he disagrees, which is a real relief. “
“So we unfortunately decided to unplug on it,” he continued. “There’s a lot of pressure to get it right and I don’t think it’s going to work.”
