Alaska police say they found the young mother of a newborn baby abandoned in a cardboard box on a frozen street with a heartbreaking inscription.
“The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s abandonment is ongoing and no criminal charges have been filed at this time,” the Alaska State Soldier said Wednesday, adding that The “minor mother” was taken to the hospital for evaluation and care.
The newborn boy huddled under a blanket in a box that was left near some mailboxes in Fairbanks on New Year’s Eve, when the temperature dropped to 1 degree.
The woman who found him posted the video of the remaining note, titled “Help Me!!!”
“My parents and grandparents had no food or money to support me,” the handwritten letter read. “They NEVER wanted to do this to me.
“My mother was very upset doing this,” it continued. “Take me away and find me A FAMILY LOVE. My parents are begging anyone to find me. My name is Teshawn. ”
The poster surmised that the mother might not realize that Alaska has a safe haven law allowing unwanted children to be released with police, firefighters or paramedics until they are 21 days old. age.
“I hope the mother gets the help she may need. I doubt they can afford to take her to the hospital and she may need medical attention. Please, someone who knows this new mom, check her out! She may fall into despair, feeling left out,” she wrote on Facebook.
“Clearly, someone in our community felt so lost and desperate that perhaps they made the hardest choice of their life to leave that innocent life on the side of the road without nothing but blankets and a name,” she wrote.
“But she named him! There’s some love there, even if she made a bad decision. I know we’re all struggling, I get it. I see you. I love you all and I am here. I saved a baby today and I will probably think about Teshawn for the rest of my life.”
Police took a DNA sample of Teshawn in an attempt to identify the next of kin, but it’s not clear if that played any role in finding the mother. The age of the mother is not provided.
Health officials have said that the baby – born 12 weeks premature, according to the note – is healthy.
