I love to save, especially when you find something cute, trendy, well-made and cheap to boot! Plus, shopping at a large thrift store gently recycles used items and prevents more waste from accumulating in our landfills. However, shopping secondhand for larger sizes presents some challenges.

first. Ignore that size mark on the shelf.
Some large thrift stores can be found labeled plus their size from XXL while others will use standard 1XL and above. Actually, look at the label. XXL can be 2XL or not. XXL in Ralph Lauren is not 2XL to me. But you won’t know unless you try it. So add it to your cart and head to the dressing room!
2. Check the items thoroughly.
Sift through the shelves and really look at the promising garments, just because a shirt looks cute and trendy it can be unexpectedly threadbare or ruffled. (I’ve been there).
Find missing buttons, zippers that open and close easily, and rips and rips. Also look at the item’s lining, if it has it. When you are searching and look at the quality of that garment, the subtle details will tell you how it will wear on you.
3. Just try it on.
Try on a range of sizes that are close to your usual size. A brand’s standard size 24 might be a size 26. Or a size 20 might actually be too big.
Because clothes come in so many styles and cuts, it’s always beneficial to try on and try on a variety of sizes.
And don’t be disheartened if your usual size clothes seem small. Thrift store clothing has been worn and washed, possibly multiple times, altered, and possibly even shrunk.
4. Can you do some tailoring?
A few sewing basics can make a shirt look bland, or turn an ankle-length skirt into a frill. Pants can become a cap, and even shorts. It can be a small job.
But for the price and end result, and one-of-a-kind look, you can’t beat it.

5. Go with your first impression.
Your first impression is a great looking gauge. If you come across a shirt that fits the size, color, and fit, enjoy that feeling instead of wasting time in the fitting room.
6. Don’t buy everything!
You need clothes, but hey – don’t just buy everything that fits.
If you want build a great wardrobe Be patient and stick to an item you really love or have the potential to be turned into something you know you’ll wear and enjoy. Otherwise those clothes will go back to the thrift store.
7. Shop for vintage items!
Thanks to high-waisted jeans again, the jeans section can be your new best friend.
Where in the past, “mom jeans” used to be a popular trend among thrift stores, now those mom jeans can be as cute as a pair of jeans. Old Navyand much less.
8. Create a trend.
Check out current fashion trends and see what kind of garments you can find in local thrift store.but also keep track of the classics.
The foundation of a great wardrobe is always the timeless essentials which rarely goes out of style. However, keep in mind that plus size does not like in favor of fast fashion (but places like Shein, Fashion Nova and PLT are catching up quickly)and because of the smaller market selection, plus size women have a harder time finding great options. As a result, they keep them longer and are less likely to give them away.
9. Shop the entire store!
Be sure to check out the rest of the store to find other great shoes, jewelry, wallets, and accessories.
Thrift stores can be scarves mecca, and with the exception of shoes, accessories aren’t limited by size! So everything is fair game.
