Zeekr 009 electric truck launches CATL cell-to-pack battery technology

Chinese automaker Geely’s Zeekr brand on Tuesday unveiled the 009, an electric truck that marks the first production launch of the battery supplier’s CATL mobile battery technology.

Zeekr’s second model, after the 001 hatchback, the 009 is a six-seat van that is expected to begin shipping in China in 2023. There are no plans to offer it in the United States, though it does. seems big enough for this market.

Zeekr teased the truck earlier this year, confirming the use Mobile Technology CATLmodules aside, battery cells are usually housed in to form a package, with several technological leaps to maintain proper monitoring and cooling and make the modules unnecessary.

CATL unveiled the latest version of its cell-to-pack technology in April, claiming it can deliver 13% more power than the 4680 format cells Tesla is switching to — as well as impressive power density of 255 watt-hours per kilogram with current technology lithium-ion cells and 160 watt-hours per kilogram with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.

In version 009, power and energy densities increase by an estimated 514 miles over the van’s 140 kWh pack, as measured during the China CLTC test cycle. That number could still pass 400 miles in a more rigorous EPA testing cycle.

A pair of engines deliver a total of 536 hp. They use silicon carbide technology for 98.5% efficiency and can propel the 009 from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds, Zeekr claims — fast for a truck.

According to Zeekr, the 009 plane contrasts sharply with the sleek 001, but still manages a drag coefficient of 0.27. The body shell also features a solid die-cast aluminum back that Zeekr claims aids in crash protection.

To avoid accidents in the first place, 009 is equipped with a Mobileye chip-based driver assistance system, with seven 8-megapixel HD cameras, four 2-megapixel surround cameras, and one long-range and 12 short-range cameras. – arrangement of radar units for sensors. Zeekr, expected to be public posting parent’s upcoming Geely, says it will offer up to 30 driver-assistance features.

Inside, passengers can use the 15.6-inch screen that folds down from the ceiling to stream content or organize TV bridges, while relaxing in the nappa leather seats with massage.

Zeekr was founded in March 2021 as a “premium electric car company” under the direction of Geely, which also owns Volvo, Polestar, Lotus Cars and Black Cab maker London Electric Vehicle Company, with internally developed brands such as Lynk & Co. and Geometry as Good. While Zeekr aims for a “asset-light operations strategy” geared toward vendors for the core technology — as demonstrated by the CATL partnership — other brands have their own engineering resources. .

Volvo and Polestar are sharing some components — with Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 are both built on the company’s Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform, although they are going their separate ways on engines and other performance components.

Cell-to-pack isn’t the only cutting-edge battery technology Geely is looking at. It is also looking into the wider availability of battery swap technology for its budget-oriented Geometry EV brand.
