Zelenskyy pleads for help at the Grammys

LAS VEGAS – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared in a video message at the Grammy Awards to ask for his assistance in telling the story of Ukraine being invaded by Russia.

In his pre-recorded message Sunday, he likened the invasion to a deadly silence that threatens to extinguish the dreams and lives of Ukrainians, including children.

“Our musicians wear armor instead of tuxedo. They sing for the wounded in the hospital, even for those who cannot hear,” he said in English. “But music is going to be groundbreaking anyway.”

The Recording Academy, together with its partner Global Citizen, prior to the ceremony highlighted a social media campaign called “Stand Up for Ukraine” to raise money and aid during the humanitarian crisis.

“Fill the silence with your music. Fill the silence today to tell our story. Tell the truth about the war on social media, on TV, support us by all means. you can, but not be silent, and then peace will come to all Zelenskyy said.

Following on from Zelenskyy’s message, John Legend performed his song “Free” alongside Ukrainian musicians Siuzanna Iglidan and Mika Newton, and poet Lyuba Yakimchuk, as images from the war were projected on the screen above after them.

The war in Ukraine took a particularly gruesome turn on Sunday when Ukrainian forces entered the town of Bucha, which was recently held by Russian soldiers, finding the bodies of those who had been shot, a number of people after being tied up and tortured. Ukrainian authorities accuse the Russians of war crimes, and European leaders call for tougher sanctions against Moscow. Russia said atrocities were carried out by the Ukrainians.
