2024 Olympics: Top five stories from day one of the Paris Games


In dangerous conditions while cycling at high speed on the streets of Paris, Team GB’s Henderson completed the time trial in 41 minutes and nine seconds to take silver behind Australia’s Grace Brown, who was a whopping 90 seconds faster.

American Chloe Dygert was less than a second behind Henderson and took third place.

It was a courageous performance from Henderson, especially considering the 25-year-old has broken her collarbone twice this season, and she kept her composure and balance as others fell around her on the slippery surface.

However, there was less good news for GB’s Josh Tarling, who missed out on a medal in the men’s time trial after suffering a puncture. He finished fourth, missing out on the podium.

Earlier in the diving competition, Harper and Mew Jensen were sixth with two dives to go and fourth before their final attempt.

Australia were all but certain to win bronze, but a superb effort from the British pair put them in third place and a horrendous mistake on Australia’s final dive denied them the chance to overtake Harper and Mew Jensen.

The bronze medal winning couple were in tears when the competition ended. robbed Englandfirst women’s diving medal at an Olympics that has lasted 64 years, behind impressive pairs from China and the United States.
