SURPRISE: Chaos of the best actress in a movie or drama genre
Both Kate Winslet And Pamela Anderson has aggressively campaigned for modestly reviewed films that lack serious clout in the awards race, at least domestically, compared to the competition. Those efforts, however, were rewarded today with surprise best actress nominations for both — one in a long line of nominations for Winslet to be honored, of course, but one The first nomination went to Anderson, whose performance was in The final showgirl has been hailed as a career best. Meanwhile, Winslet was recognized for her passion project Lybiographical film about photographer Lee Miller, which she produced. Both of their paths to the Oscars are still challenging, given the stiff competition, but being nominated at the Golden Globes at least keeps them talking. (Winslet was recently supported in her campaign by Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio And Jodie Foster, while Anderson’s Oscar-winning co-star Jamie Lee Curtis remains her strongest supporter.)
However, these nominations came at the expense of performances that have received more praise from critics thus far and are expected to be here: Saoirse Ronan because outstandingin which she gives an entertaining performance as a recovering alcoholic and Marianne Jean-Baptiste because The harsh trutha tragic character study anchored by its ferocious drive. However, all hope is not lost as Deadwyler has nabbed an Indie Spirit nomination for Piano lessons—and maybe the Academy will love the movie more. —Rebecca Ford
SURPRISE: Kate Winslet, Regime
Oh, you thought Winslet was only nominated for Best Actress today? She was also nominated for an unannounced project in television: Regimea divisive HBO satire that the Emmys almost completely ignored. It’s worth remembering that Winslet won five Golden Globes considering her performance this morning, as neither of her 2024 projects generated much attention. But what is also relevant is her acting in Regimeas a fictional European country-turned-dictator, unlike anything in her movies, a frenzied comedic performance that fails to translate from scene to scene. Definitely, middle Ly And RegimeThe Globe highlighted the star’s impressive range—if long acknowledged—as a performer. —DC
SNUB: Sing Sing
Sing Sing entered this week with a lot of momentum after doing well at Gothams and making the AFI top 10 list. But the film’s only Golden Globe nomination belonged to lead actor Colman Domingo. The project was clearly left out of the best film, drama and supporting actor lists for breakout character Clarence Maclin. To maintain its momentum, Sing Sing will have to continue to perform well with other voting groups in the coming months. —RF

Allison Janney only appeared in the last two episodes of the show diplomatof the eventful second season, but she made them count: As the imposing but seemingly weak Vice President Grace Penn, former vice president West Wing star has made a stellar return to political television—especially shining in the icy scenes opposite Keri Russell. With the second season’s protagonist planning bigger things for his character, Janney’s diplomat The trip got off to a promising start.
