Here’s what the super producer-writer thinks

Social media is abuzz with debate about whether the genre needs the excitement of the ’90s. Oomph here means dedication to love, depth and soul.

Meanwhile, Grammy Award winner suggests that new-age R&B singers no longer get vocal advice from church performances.

“Young black men today don’t go to church and they don’t groom the church band. Like B. Cox came from the church. Jodeci comes from the church. So when you listen to that soul, the soul that you think is the soul, that’s an additional piece of information….it’s hard to beat Jodeci when you don’t have that element,” Dupri said.

In addition, Dupri also uses Anthony Hamilton as an example, citing a recent collaborative track. He said Hamilton’s voice was touched by performing music in church and that element would not come “from the internet.” Ultimately, Dupri’s point is that “church band grooming” is the element that today’s R&B is lacking.
