1 in 4 people have experienced identity fraud – and most of them blame AI

According to a recent study by Censuswide, more than 25% of people said they have been victims of a scam involving identity fraud. The majority of these victims blame AI.

While the scam these people fell victim to may not have involved AI, the possibility of deep counterfeiting is their biggest future concern. When asked about the biggest threat to identity security, 78% of users pointed to the abuse of AI.

Up to 70% of respondents said they encounter deepfake documents at least once a week. Less than half of the research team said they felt confident enough to tell when something was an AI-generated fake.

These numbers highlight that, although AI seems to be everywhere, many people realize that it also carries significant risks.

So what is the solution? More than half (55%) of survey respondents believe that current technology is not enough to protect our identities and that more technology is the best option for detecting deepfakes . Another large proportion (45%) believe that regulatory options are the best path, including stricter laws and regulations for AI.

Research clearly shows that everyone understands the downsides of AI. However, they also believe that they do not have enough knowledge to overcome those disadvantages and do not fully trust the help of other technology. The result is a warning that we should all be more vigilant.
