Nintendo’s profits in the Switch generation are absolutely wild
The latest financial earnings release is now available and in case you missed it, Nintendo Switch has officially surpassed 140 million sales worldwide.
The hybrid system has worked very well over the past seven years and now not far off the lifetime sales of the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PlayStation 2. However, to seriously illustrate just how impressive Nintendo’s current generation hardware is, social network user ‘Pierre485’ shared a chart illustrating its key milestones.
According to an analysis of Nintendo’s profits by fiscal year, what’s most notable is that the Switch era actually surpassed the company’s “combined profits” from 1981 to 2016 (even if you exclude the 3DS in these years). You can see the green bars going up in the chart below, showing this big profit increase:
The big spike for the Switch is around 2021, and before this generation, Nintendo’s success came from the early years of the Wii and when the DS was in full swing. The source also shows a similar chart of inflation, reinforcing how successful Nintendo has been during the Switch era. Remember that today’s video game industry is bigger than ever, and this includes a larger globally connected player base.
Even though the Switch is still going strong, Nintendo seems to be most of is ready to move on to its successor, as revealed by company president Shuntaro Furukawa The next system will be announced in “this financial year”. There will also be one Live in June to focus on software for the current Nintendo Switch.
