Aldi launches a Thanksgiving price war among grocery stores

Amid a campaign of talk about increasing grocery prices, grocery stores are slashing prices Aldi is rolling out a Thanksgiving-focused deal that it says will feed 10 people for $47.

This deal is the company’s lowest-priced Thanksgiving dinner deal in five years—and it comes with all the traditional sides you’d expect. Included in the Thanksgiving basket is a 16 lb butter turkey with relish, gravy, rolls, mac & cheese, stuffing – as well as ingredients for cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie.

Special offer starts today and will run through November 27. Availability may vary by store location.

“We know grocery prices remain a top priority for our customers,” CEO Jason Hart said in a statement. “We’ve worked hard this Thanksgiving to provide the best quality and value products so people can enjoy a traditional meal with family and friends without having to downsize scale.”

$47 would be a significant savings over the price of an average Thanksgiving feast. In 2023, the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates the average cost for 10 people is $61.17down from 2022’s level of $64.05.

Aldi’s low-price offer follows Walmart’s announcement of a similar meal deal, priced $2 more. The lower prices could signal Aldi’s intention to escalate its battle with larger grocery chains. This chain is in the process of expanding operations in the US and has plans to open 800 more stores within the next 5 years.

Although there has been much discussion about grocery prices over the past few months, food price inflation has dropped significantly, according to the Consumer Price Index. Grocery prices in August saw a year-over-year increase of just 0.9%.

Aldi stores, which tend to have smaller footprints than competitors, claim to offer savings of up to 40% to grocery shoppers, with a focus on store brands.
