Spotify cracks down on piracy, banning users of the app ahead of the release of Wrapped 2024

Spotify is taking a strong stance against piracy, disabling all modified apps just days before the expected launch of the Spotify Wrapped 2024 feature. This annual event aims to highlight users’ music listening habits and is eagerly awaited by millions of people around the world. In an effort to ensure that only legitimate users access the service, Spotify has implemented API-level changes that block modified versions of the app. These changes prevent users from accessing music, replacing content with error messages like “This playlist is empty; home to find your personalized playlist.”

Consequences for users of the application have been modified

The timing of the move is important as it coincides with the upcoming release of Spotify Wrapped 2024, where the streaming giant is giving users personalized insights into their year of music, including Top songs, favorite artists and albums. For those who rely on modified apps, missing out on this feature is just one of the consequences. Users of these apps also risk having their accounts permanently banned.

Feedback and subscription incentives

Spotify’s crackdown sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, leaving many users frustrated by the sudden disruption. While the platform remains free to use, certain features such as offline listening and high-quality streaming require a paid subscription. Spotify continues to offer various subscription plans, including an attractive offer for new and returning users: three months of Premium access for just Rs. 59.

This move is not unique to Spotify; Using modified applications carries significant risks beyond losing access to Wrapped. With the rise of cybercrime, modified applications can expose users to threats such as personal data theft and financial fraud. We always recommend using official versions to ensure security.
