Video: Digital Foundry Looking Back at Zelda 64 Recompiled: Majora’s Mask

The Nintendo 64 emulation scene has come a long way, and the latest recompilation project revolutionizes the original PC ports.

Our friends at Time extension shared a recent post about N64Recomp – describing the tool as having the potential to transition into the world of N64 emulation, as it streamlines the process of native ports and adds modern improvements like speed Unlimited frames, ultra-wide monitor support, and even ray tracing.

Now, technology experts at Digital foundry took an “in-depth” look at Zelda 64: Recompiled and its original PC port The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask – summed it up as a “fantastic” effort and mentioned it can’t wait to see what happens next.

“Zelda 64 Recompiled, or more specifically Mr. Wiseguy’s N64Recomp, represents a new era of playing Nintendo 64 games on PC, as it’s technically a new way to make it happen. real…This is not a simulation of hardware behavior…nor does it go as far as decompiling in an attempt to recreate the original source code…recompilation takes the N64 binaries and compiles recompile them into C code, which is obviously portable, and they can then be compiled for any platform including PC… then new features and improvements can also be added and a new rendering engine that drives it all…”

This is just part one of Zelda 64: Recompiled, the creator mentioned how Zelda: Ocarina of Time is also on the way.

“Zelda 64: Recompiled is a project that uses N64: Recompiled to statically recompile Majora’s Mask (and soon Ocarina of Time) into a native port with many new features and improvements. This project uses RT64 as rendering engine to provide some of these improvements.”
