Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi confirmed in a recent interview with Bloomberg (Thank, VGC) that he is not interested in continuing the franchise.

Indeed, since he left Square Enix in 2003 to form Mistwalker, this isn’t necessarily shocking, but what’s interesting is the reasoning behind his decision. According to Sakaguchi, he uploaded Final Fantasy XIV in 2021 with the aim of spending just a few hours playing the game before attending the event.

The hours turned into a real obsession, with Sakaguchi confessing, “I’m almost living in Final Fantasy XIV now.” As such, he expressed concern that revisiting the series as an expert would affect his enjoyment of the games, citing his transition from creator to consumer.

“If I take on Final Fantasy brand again, i don’t know if i can really enjoy Final Fantasy XIV so much.”

Additionally, Sakaguchi reiterated that he has no interest in working on bringing older Mistwalker games, like Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey, to modern platforms. He confirmed that he and the team are working on something entirely new, but wouldn’t comment on what that might be. The best guess at this point points to a direct sequel to Illusionas the company recently filed a trademark application for ‘Fantasian Dark Edge’.
