Frontier Airlines cuts 8 routes in latest network overhaul

Frontier Airlines continues to make major changes to its network.

This time, the Denver-based airline has cut eight domestic routes, first seen on Cirium’s schedule and later confirmed by a spokesperson for the airline. The cuts are wide-ranging and affect multiple airports across the country.

You’ll find a map of the affected routes below, but the most notable are the two flights cut from El Paso, Texas and two flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

In fact, flights to El Paso only launched a few weeks ago in May and are now being cut immediately. After flights from Ontario, California and San Diego to El Paso were suspended, Frontier will only serve the Texas city from Denver and Las Vegas.

Frontier’s cuts don’t represent any retreat from the market for the airline, but the San Juan restrictions are notable given the fact that the airline has a base in Puerto Rico’s capital.

That said, San Juan has recently become the latest battleground for airline dominance. JetBlue Airways, which previously operated a hub in San Juan, recently announced that it would double its service there, as it has ceded market share in recent years to other more recent entrants, including Frontier and ultralow-cost rival Spirit Airlines.

Earlier this year, Frontier added a 54 new routes Followed by 17 more just a few weeks later. It also cut 16 in February, followed by 14 more March.

For its part, Frontier declined to comment on the route changes, with spokeswoman Jen de la Cruz saying briefly that “they have been discontinued at least seasonally.”
