How to earn points

You will earn 2 points per dollar on travel booked through Amex Travel and on the first $6,000 you spend at US Supermarket per year (then 1 point per dollar) and 1 point per dollar on everything else. It’s not a rewards structure worth writing about, but if you just max out the supermarket rewards category, that’s $240 in rewards value over the course of the year.

What’s unique about the Amex EveryDay and its sister card, the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express, is that they both offer rewards when you use your card a certain amount throughout the month. For the Amex Everyday, you’ll get a 20% bonus on all spending when you make 20 or more purchases in a month. Assuming you hit that threshold each month, you’ll earn 2.4x Amex Travel and supermarket spending (4.8% return) and 1.2x (2.4% return) daily expenses.

How to redeem points

Is the Amex EveryDay Preferred Card a better choice?

The Amex EveryDay card has an older sibling — the Amex EveryDay Preferred. In exchange for a $95 annual fee, you get a higher welcome bonus of 15,000 points after spending $1,000 in the first three months. You also get expanded rewards categories and a 50% earning bonus when you make at least 30 transactions in a month.

So which one is right for you?

If you know you’ll spend around $16,000 or more on the card in a year (and plan to hit the 30-transaction threshold per month), the Amex EveryDay Preferred is worth the annual fee. Considering the difference in the base rewards rate (3 points per dollar assuming you earn a monthly bonus), you’d need to spend $15,833.33 per year (about $1,320 per month) to make the Amex EveryDay Preferred more valuable—and that’s even if you never use the card for a single bonus category spend. When you add in any spending that earns you bonus rewards, that number drops significantly.

People on a budget who know they won’t spend enough to cover the cost of the annual fee should go with the Amex EveryDay. However, if you plan to use this card as your primary spending card, the $95 annual fee for the Preferred card is worth it.

Overall, this isn’t a bad travel card for beginners in the points world because you’re earning value. Membership Rewards on eligible travel and supermarket purchases without paying an annual fee. While there are other starting cards out there with higher earning rates, the rewards you earn will not be worth it until you put those cards together with a higher level card later.
