Do people really like Gundam Seed and Destiny?
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and its sequel Seeds of Destiny are some of the most influential and popular Robot active in their native Japan. But I found them completely unbearable to watch, and can’t begin to understand how anyone could actually like these two. With their slow pacing, annoying characters, and large number of mobile suits, this is one of the Robot The entries don’t even have the ridiculous pomp of Code Geass to make it interesting.
Before we begin, I want to acknowledge that Destiny Cosmic Era had a particularly difficult production process. Chiaki Morosawa, the main writer and creator of Cosmic Era, became seriously ill in 2002 after production. Gundam Seed. Because her treatment often took her away from her duties and resulted in delays, many Sunrise staff members had to replace her, thus explaining the large number of flashback and compilation episodes in Destiny. Morosawa is the wife of Mitsuo Fukuda, director of Seeds And Destiny. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fukuda was also absent from the studio or if he couldn’t work at his best because his wife was sick.
It’s admirable that the core team managed to complete over fifty episodes of the show considering the circumstances. But while I can acknowledge and sympathize with the difficulties behind the scenes, most of my core issues have nothing to do with flashbacks. Even if Sunrise had a good time with DestinyI suspect it would be better if Seeds already
There’s always something positive in a situation, and even though I didn’t love Cosmic Era, I still had things I liked about it! The music was great, the cast all gave great performances, and Athrun was hilarious. I brought up Athrun without a topic in conversations about Robot because he’s one of my favorite butt monkeys in the series. He’s a bit of a jerk between his indecisive nature and his easy-to-laugh lines, as well as his tendency to self-destruct his expensive and advanced mobile suits. However, Shinn Asuka is my best boy in Cosmic Era, and I like Super Robot War series to redeem him. The fact that I’m a fan of Shinn Asuka is a hint as to why Destiny especially makes me much angrier Seeds do.
About Seeds And Destiny Both shows are very dramatic. Most Robot The shows could have been serious disappointments considering they focused on the horrors of war, but Seeds And Destiny especially seems to be dialed up to eleven. That’s saying a lot considering they came after Wingbut also very dramatic in its own right. The drama of Wing comes from the situations the characters are facing, while there is a lot of drama in Seeds And Destiny It revolves around relationships. The Kira-Flay-Lacus (?) love triangle takes up too much time, as does the Athrun-Cagalli enemies-to-lovers relationship. I’m neutral on the ship, but at least Athrun and Cagalli have that very interesting background.
Kira and Lacus are so boring. I really don’t care what happens there, except obviously Free movie is all about that. They have no real desires, fears, or motivations for anything. When Kira and Lacus become a couple, they are like a pair of anglerfish fused together during mating. What makes Kira a lame protagonist and a pretty cool villain (but NOT the ultimate villain!) is that the world seems to bend around him. He is always right and he will let you know it with his death lasers. Why does he do the things he does? Oh, for peace, he says. How does that translate to peace? Shut up, Kira has flashy Gundams to disassemble.
My greatest hatred is with Destiny. Between his past, grudge against Freedom, and personality, I found Shinn to be a much more interesting protagonist than Kira. Athrun being his terrible superior was also a plus. SeedsThe popularity and influence of ‘ means that Sunrise can never portray Kira and Athrun in a truly bad light, even if they wanted to. But I like how Shinn highlights many of their hypocrisies and self-contradictions. It helps them to be more dynamic in an extended sense, as these flaws make them feel more rounded as characters.
And then Shinn started appearing less and less after Athrun defected from ZAFT. By the time Kira was fully back in the spotlight, it was all over. I still remember the shock of seeing Shinn’s name listed third in the introduction instead of when he was always the first. Kira and Athrun had surpassed him. Even Free The movie—Kira and Lacus—is coming out on Shinn’s birthday. He can’t win.
When I was a child, I heard rumors that people hated Shinn very much in Japan at that time. Destiny‘s broadcast, they’ll be booing Kenichi Suzumura on the street. It sounds a little too ridiculous to be true and I really hope it isn’t. But honestly, Shinn isn’t that bad. I don’t get why people think he’s annoying. Sure, he can be annoying, but his idealistic efforts to do good, even if it means going against orders, make him much more likable than Kira and Athrun. Sometimes it feels like people just dislike him because he butts heads with those two and honestly, who wouldn’t? Athrun is a terrible boss to him.
If Kira was just a boring person Seedshe is really upset in Destiny. Let’s skip it. Seeds in a second to lose about Gundam 00I put up Gundam 00 Because as soon as Celestial Being appears on the scene, we see civilians and military alike react with mockery and skepticism towards Celestial Being’s methods. Peace through violence, and by throwing yourself into wars that don’t concern you? Ridiculous. But that’s exactly what Kira did in the first half. Destiny.
Kira blowing up the Destroy Gundam despite Shinn’s persuasion of Stellar is understandable. It’s not like he knew Shinn would succeed, and in the case of Destroy, Stellar was rampaging through Berlin and was a real, real threat to thousands of people. But in all the incidents before Destroy, Kira’s attempt to stop people from fighting involved indiscriminate destruction of machines. As Athrun puts it, Heine died due to Kira’s direct intervention, even though Stellar was the one who actually killed him. He could barely articulate his motives as Athrun yelled at him, making Kira seem less like a force of justice and more like an irrational tyrant.
Some franchises become popular because they appear at the right time in the right place. Genshin Impact breaking into the normal market is because it appeared right during the COVID-19 quarantine, for example. Maybe that way Robot fans seem to put Seeds And Destiny on a pedestal because they have fond memories of watching the show. Nothing beats nostalgia, after all. In any case, I’m excited Free to stream. I have a bottle of soju in my fridge with that movie on it.
Gundam Seed And Seeds of Destiny available to watch through services like Crunchyroll. Gundam Seed Freedom The movie will appear on Netflix from September 1, 2024.
