Hololive Breaking Dimensions Concert Lets Everyone Shine

The talent pool for Hololive English is getting pretty big, with four generations currently active under the label. So it’s no surprise that they have enough talented singers to host their own annual concert at a famous venue. But used to be One pleasant surprise was that the Hololive Breaking Dimensions concert not only relied on the company’s strongest singers and most popular members like Gawr Gura or guests like Hoshimachi Suisei, but also gave new or less successful artists their own time to shine and show how much they have improved.

Taking place at New York’s Kings Theatre on August 25 and 26, 2024, the Breaking Dimensions concert is the second official Hololive English performance following the 2023 concert. Connecting the world. This time, the entire first three generations of Hololive English participated in the performance: Myth, Promise (formerly Council and Project: Hope), and Advent, along with four guests from the Japanese and Indonesian branches. Together, they performed over 30 songs, both solo and in groups, interspersed with short breaks where some of the girls would lead the crowd in a call-and-response style. The concert did not feature the recently debuted Hololive Justice, but they did a great job of voicing them before and after each performance.

Both days of the Hololive Breaking Dimensions concert kicked off with some real crowd favourites: HoloMyth took the headliner with ‘ReUnion’ followed by IRyS’ eurobeat-inspired ‘Carbonated Love’ on day 1, while day 2 kicked off with Advent singing their original ‘Rebellion’ followed by Hakos Baelz’s ‘Gekirin’. I’ve seen Bae perform before at DreamHack Melbourne but her dancing skills still left me completely amazed, even if I didn’t fully relate to the song. Other highlights included famous Hatsune Miku fan Gawr Gura singing ‘World is Mine’, and Moona Hoshinova joining Suisei, IRyS, and Baelz in a powerful performance of ‘High Tide’.

But beyond those established vocalists, what really impressed me was how the less musically focused members improved, and even stepped up to perform great solos. Ninomae Ina’nis, who sometimes seemed a bit withdrawn purplestunned as she launched into a falsetto for ‘Synchrogazer’. Meanwhile, Ceres Fauna not only debuted a new song with bandmate Nanashi Mumei, but also took the stage solo for a performance of ‘Mayonaka no Door (Stay With Me)’. That’s not to say they haven’t performed well before, but the confidence they showed at Breaking Dimensions was on another level and it was amazing to witness, especially having followed some of them since their debut.

Likewise, each member of Hololive Advent had their own solo set at Breaking Dimensions, in addition to participating in various collaborations with other members. Rising stars FuwaMoco even had two solos (duets?), proving their performing prowess with their original song, ‘Born to be a “BAU”DOL!’, and a cover of Houshou Marine and Gawr Gura’s ‘Shinkiro’. Meanwhile, Nerissa Ravencroft struggled to not steal the spotlight in every song she appeared on, and Koseki Bijou gave a pretty solid performance of ‘Koi wa Sensou’. It was a very strong performance considering they hadn’t even debuted at the time of last year’s concert, and I’m looking forward to seeing what newcomers Justice bring to the table when next year’s event rolls around.

If I had to criticize something, it would be that the models’ expressions during the MC sections seemed a bit stiff. They were fine during the performances when they could have been programmed to match the choreography, but during the freer sections, the technology they used seemed to not keep up with their expressions.

But regardless, Breaking Dimensions represents a huge part of the appeal of Hololive and Vtubers in general. It’s not just the talent and hard work of the performers that’s compelling, impressive as they are, but the personal touch you get from watching them adapt and grow. That’s what keeps me, at least, coming back to see them, and it’s why I’ll be looking forward to the next EN concert in 2025.
