Airplane passengers film Icelandic volcanic lava from above
Passengers filmed lava and smoke as their plane passed over a volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula.
It erupted for the seventh time in less than a year. Below, the parking lot at Iceland’s world-famous Blue Lagoon is submerged in lava.
Hotel guests and nearby homes were evacuated but authorities said there was no threat to air travel in the area.
Before 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula had not seen any volcanic activity in 800 years.
Seismologists say the long-dormant fault lies beneath the awakened landscape.
