Analyst says PS5 will sell more than ‘Switch 2’ in US this year
Despite the immense excitement surrounding Nintendo’s reveal and release of the upcoming ‘Switch 2’, Circana (NPD) analyst Mat Piscatella predicted that Sony’s PlayStation 5 will sell more units in the US this year.
Let’s talk blue sky (Thank, push square), Piscatella said that he expects the Switch successor to sell about 4.3 million units in the region, provided it launches in the first half of the year. That’s still a pretty big number, but Piscatella expects there will be some hardware limitations after the initial surge in demand. So he thinks the PS5 will eventually outsell the Switch 2.
Part of us really wants to roll our eyes and exclaim, “Wow, Oh!“. It seems a bit obvious that the PS5, a console that will be available for a whole year (no doubt, with some choice discounts here and there) will sell better than a completely new console. It’s completely new and hasn’t even been officially announced yet.
That said, Piscatella’s comments are an interesting counterpoint to a prediction recently made by DFC Intelligence, which stated that Switch 2 will be the “clear winner” of the next generation of gaming consoles, selling more than 17 million units in its first year. The important thing to remember here is that Piscatella only mentioned the United States in his prediction, so a global figure of 17 million is still possible. By comparison, the original Switch had only sold about 15 million units globally by the end of 2017.
