Android users no longer have to worry about data if their phone is stolen, Google launches new feature

Having your device stolen is unexpected, stressful, and difficult to react quickly at the time it happens. That’s why Google announced a series of anti-theft features at I/O 2024 that can automatically identify suspicious signals and proactively protect your data on your device. Some of these features are starting to roll out to Android 10+ devices through Play services. As reported by 9to5Google, once enabled, users can search for “Anti-Theft” in the Settings app, or they can visit the redesigned Google services page > All Services tab > Personal Safety personnel and equipment.

Theft detection lock

Theft Detection Lock is a powerful new feature that uses Google AI to detect if someone snatches your phone out of your hand and tries to run, bike, or drive away. If a common movement associated with theft is detected, your phone’s screen will quickly lock – this helps prevent thieves from easily accessing your data.

Lock your device offline

If a thief tries to disconnect your phone for an extended period of time, Offline Device Lock will automatically lock the screen to help protect your data even when your device is offline. Android can also recognize other signs that your device may fall into the wrong hands. For example, it will lock your device’s screen when it makes too many failed authentication attempts.

Remote lock

The Remote Lock feature will bring you a lifeline if your phone is gone. You will be able to lock your phone screen with just your phone number and take a quick security challenge using any device. This gives you time to restore your account details and access additional useful options in Find My Device, including sending a full factory reset to completely erase the device .
