Best Microsoft Surface: Which models to buy or avoid (2024)
Surface Pro type case for $130: This type of cover is one of our favorite accessories. The case is easy to attach, the keys are comfortable to type on, and it’s the least expensive option for the Surface Pro line. It is compatible with Surface Pro 8 and earlier. There is something similar Cover Type for the Surface Go line also costs 130 USD.
Surface Pro Signature Keyboard for $126: The Pro Signature Keyboard is expensive but is the best choice if you’re using a Surface Pro X or Surface Pro 8 with Slim Pen 2. This keyboard comes with built-in storage for a stylus that doubles as as a charger. That way, you don’t have to worry about losing your device or running out of battery.
Surface pen for $100: The Surface Pen is compatible with countless Surface devices, so it’s helpful if you’re always switching between Microsoft laptops and tablets. It contains precision ink—with tilt for shading—along with thousands of pressure points and near-zero latency. Unlike the Slim Pen that supports wireless charging, the Surface Pen runs on batteries.
Surface Slim Pen 2 for $130: With the second-generation Slim Pen, Microsoft added haptic feedback and lower latency (sketching and writing will feel more responsive). We liked using it with the Surface Pro 8, but it’s also compatible with many other Surface devices. This is an ideal accessory if you rely on your tablet to take notes or draw.
Logitech K380 Wireless Keyboard for $40: If you want to use a cheap Bluetooth keyboard with your Surface device, we like Logitech’s K380 Wireless Keyboard. It’s inexpensive, offers a good typing experience, and is compact. It also comes in a super cute pink color.
Twelve Southern Mini StayGo USB-C Hubs for $60: Ports can be a bit scarce on Surface devices. This hub from Twelve South comes with a USB-A port, HDMI, headphone jack, and a USB-C port for pass-through charging. You can plug it into your device or extend it with the included cord.
Microsoft Adaptive Accessories ($15 to $45): Microsoft provides a variety of PC hardware for people with limited mobility, includes programmable buttons, an adaptive mouse, and a hub for wireless connection to a PC.
Protect your surfaces with Microsoft Complete
If you’re new to your devices, get one Complete Microsoft extended warranty. Starting at $99, it gives you additional warranty coverage, plus two accidental damage claims with a $49 deductible. Microsoft will offer up to four years of warranty on specific Surface devices and will cover things like cracked screens, drops, and spills.
You can get Microsoft Complete in a few different ways. You can add it in real time when you buy a Surface device. However, if you’re not sure whether you need one, you can make an appointment with a Microsoft product specialist, add directly through the Surface App, or contact Microsoft Store Support. However, it’s worth noting that you’ll have up to 45 days after purchase to add a protection plan.
Should you wait to buy?
Are not. Back in September, Microsoft launched a new one Surface laptop studio 2 And Surface Go 3 Laptop. There’s also the new Surface Go 4, but the refresh is only for business consumers. More recently, Microsoft announced the new Surface Pro (11th edition) and Surface Laptop (7th edition). These are the successors to the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5, but the company no longer follows the numerical naming structure in favor of “versions.” Both devices are currently available for pre-order and are fully available starting June 18.
We’re still waiting for the Surface Studio 3 (all-in-one desktop). The final version was released in October 2022. Microsoft has not yet announced any details about the next-generation model.
